Ring Repair St. Louis

A broken, bent, or damaged ring is more than a cosmetic problem — especially when it’s a piece that matters to you. An engagement ring, a wedding band, a family heirloom, or a class ring carries meaning that no other piece of jewelry can replace. When something goes wrong, you want it fixed by someone who treats your ring with the same care you do.

At Watch Technicians, we provide professional ring repair in St. Louis at our Creve Coeur location, serving customers from across the metro area. Every repair is completed in-house by our own jewelers — your ring never leaves our shop. Walk in for a free inspection and honest estimate, and we’ll tell you exactly what your ring needs before any work begins.

Note: If you need your ring sized larger or smaller, visit our ring resizing service page or read our Ring Resizing in St. Louis guide for details on that service.

Ring Repair Services We Offer in St. Louis

Our jewelers handle the full range of ring repair services in-house. Here are the most common repairs we perform.

Broken Shank Repair

The shank is the part of the ring that encircles your finger. Over time — especially on rings worn daily for years — the shank can crack, split, or break entirely. This is particularly common at the bottom of the band where the metal is thinnest and subject to the most stress.

Shank repair involves soldering the break, reshaping the ring to its original round form, and polishing the repair smooth so it’s invisible. For shanks that are worn very thin throughout, we may recommend adding metal to reinforce the entire shank rather than just soldering the break — this creates a more durable long-term repair. We’ll walk you through both options and the cost difference when you bring the ring in.

Bent Ring Repair

Rings get bent more often than people realize — a fall, an impact during sports, or even years of minor pressure can distort a ring from its original round shape. A bent ring is uncomfortable to wear and stresses the metal, which can eventually lead to cracking.

We reshape bent rings back to their original round form using ring mandrels and careful pressure. For rings with stones, we inspect the prongs after reshaping to make sure the stones are still secure.

Prong Re-Tipping and Replacement

Prongs hold your stones in place, and they wear down over time. Thin, worn, or broken prongs are the leading cause of lost stones — and once a stone falls out, it’s often lost for good. We re-tip worn prongs by adding new metal to restore their original height and grip, or replace prongs entirely when they’re too worn to repair. Learn more about our diamond prong repair services.

If you notice a prong that looks bent, thin, or broken, bring your ring in immediately. A prong repair costs far less than replacing a lost stone, and we can often complete it the same day.

Stone Tightening and Replacement

Sometimes a stone isn’t at risk of falling out immediately, but you can feel or hear it moving slightly in its setting. This is a warning sign. We tighten loose stones by carefully closing the prongs back around the girdle of the stone. This is a delicate process — too much pressure and the prong cracks; too little and the stone remains at risk. If a stone has already been lost, our stone replacement service can source a matching gem and set it properly.

Soldering Split or Cracked Bands

Cracks in a ring band can develop from stress, impact, or metal fatigue. If caught early, a soldering repair fills the crack and restores structural integrity. We solder the repair point, shape it, and polish it smooth. In most cases the repair site is invisible after polishing.

Ring Cleaning and Polishing

As part of any ring repair, we clean the ring ultrasonically and polish it to restore its original shine. Our complimentary ultrasonic cleaning is available to any customer even without a repair — just walk in and ask.

What Types of Rings Can We Repair?

We work on all jewelry repair metals and ring types, including gold rings in all karats (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k) in yellow, white, and rose gold, silver and sterling silver, platinum, palladium, engagement rings and diamond solitaires, wedding bands, eternity rings, class rings and signet rings, fashion and costume rings (case by case), and heirloom and antique rings.

White gold rings often need rhodium replating after repair work to restore the bright white finish. Soldering and polishing can remove the rhodium layer, leaving a slightly yellowish tone. We offer rhodium plating as part of or after any white gold ring repair so your ring looks exactly as it should when you get it back.

Some ring materials cannot be repaired through traditional soldering. Tungsten carbide and ceramic rings cannot be soldered or resized — they require replacement if damaged. Titanium can sometimes be repaired but is more limited. If you’re unsure whether your ring can be repaired, bring it in for a free assessment.

How Much Does Ring Repair Cost in St. Louis?

Ring repair costs vary significantly depending on the type of repair, the metal, and whether stones need to be removed and reset during the process. Simple repairs like stone tightening or minor soldering start at affordable prices. More involved work like shank replacement or multiple prong re-tips costs more. We always provide a free estimate before starting any work. There are no surprises — you approve the cost before we touch your ring.

How Long Does Ring Repair Take?

Simple repairs like prong re-tipping and stone tightening can often be completed within one to three days. More involved work like shank repair or rebuilding worn prongs may take a few days to a week depending on the metal and complexity. We’ll give you an accurate timeline when you drop off your ring.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ring Repair in St. Louis

How do I know if my ring needs repair?

Signs your ring needs professional attention include: a prong that looks bent, thin, or missing; a stone that moves or shifts when you touch it; a crack or split in the band; the ring has been bent out of round; or visible thinning of the shank. When in doubt, bring it in for a free inspection — catching a problem early is always cheaper than repairing the damage that results from waiting.

Can a completely broken ring be repaired?

In most cases, yes. Even rings that have broken completely in half can be soldered back together, though the repair is more involved than fixing a crack. The feasibility depends on the metal, how clean the break is, and whether stones need to be temporarily removed. We’ll assess the break when you bring it in.

What’s the difference between ring repair and ring resizing?

Ring repair fixes structural damage — cracks, broken prongs, bent bands, broken clasps. Ring resizing changes the circumference of the ring to fit a different finger size. They’re separate services, though some repairs involve both.

Can you repair a ring with stones in it?

Yes. Most ring repairs can be performed with stones in place. For some repairs — particularly soldering work near stones — we may remove the stones temporarily to protect them from heat, then reset them after the metalwork is complete. We’ll let you know if this is necessary and include it in your estimate.

Do I need an appointment for ring repair?

No. Our Creve Coeur location accepts walk-ins Monday through Saturday. Just bring your ring in and we’ll take a look.
